Independent Artists

Independent artists is quite a broad term used to describe individuals are artists who create work independently without external support. The most obvious example of independent artists would be unsigned bands or musicians who produce music without the backing of a record label. Many people prefer the work of independent artists as they believe the fact that they’re able to work independently allows them completely control of their work. Independent artists and musicians are often though by people, especially those who are stringent supports of the independent art and music scene, to have a greater deal of artistic integrity than other artists. 

Many artists and musicians choose to work as independent artists for this reason as working independently allows them complete control of their output.  There are many organisations that support the work of independent artist and these organisations will frequently organise displays and exhibitions of their work. Some art galleries will exclusively exhibit the work of independent artist.

For musical independent artists there are a number of independent record labels, known as indie labels, which will often sign artist who suit a specialist niche market they cater to. Many of these indie labels will ensure that their independent artists and musicians are allowed complete creative control of their work and unlike major record labels they do not sign artists for their commercial potential. Independent artists are signed to these record labels for the quality of their output rather than their selling power.
